The bar in the Mayday space in the Northside has a new name as well as a theme – Northside Yacht Club. Well, two Wellmann’s Brands oldtimers are behind the venture. In the past, Jon Weiner was the general manager at Japp’s Since 1879; and Stuart MacKenzie still does events and marketing for the Wellmann’s Brands bars that also include The Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar, Myrtle’s Punch House and The Famous Neon’s Unplugged. They expect to start the construction soon and be open in June.
MacKenzie told that he and Weiner came up with the theme as they were reading a book regarding Northside which showed the mansion at Spring Grove Ave., then the Northside Electric Company, during the flood of 1937. He told that the water was up to the 3rd floor of the building and one could literally boat up to it.
They decided to make on that piece of history as well as hug the nautical theme and the laid-back distinctive emotional aura which the yacht club implies, said MacKenzie. The decor would be breathed in by maritime bars in Scotland, the place where MacKenzie went to school, as well as on the East and West Coasts: There is a rope design above the bar and elusive wood trim all over the space.
The chef of the bar Ryan Whitcomb, has worked at places like Dilly Deli, Local 127 and Nuvo. He would create a little menu: smoked chicken wings with 5-6 homemade sauces, homemade Cincinnati chili, poutine, a salad along with a vegetarian option.
